Is Apple Still Working On A Tesla Competitor?

Apple is in talks with “at least” four companies for a “revolutionary” lidar sensor design, a Reuters report said. The move is the latest evidence of Apple’s renewed ambitions to enter the self-driving car game.

To recall Apple’s past efforts, the company started working on “Project Titan” way back in 2014. More than 1,000 employees were hired by Apple to develop an electric vehicle at an unknown location near its Cupertino headquarters. However, some internal issues at Apple impacted the project.

As per the latest report, Apple is seeking lidar units with smaller, cheaper and more easily mass produced “revolutionary” design than current technology. The name of the companies approached by the iPhone maker has not been disclosed yet.

The sensor effort means Apple wants to develop the entire chain of hardware to guide autonomous vehicles and has joined automakers and investors in the race to find winning technologies, the report added.
