The API market is exploding with API now accounting for over 80% of web traffic. Yet, applications are more distributed than ever before, which can be complex to manage. Furthermore, there is a myriad of security considerations to take into account because of the growing security risks. Traefik Labs’ new solution, called Traefik Hub, is tackling these challenges by helping users publish and secure their services all from a single control plane.

In this episode of TFiR: Let’s Talk, Swapnil Bhartiya sits down with Emile Vauge, Founder and CEO at Traefik Labs, while at KubeCon EU 2023 in Amsterdam. He talks about the key trends in the API market and the benefits and features of their new product, Traefik Hub. He goes on to discuss the challenges of a hyper-distributed future and how they are trying to stay ahead of the curve with their products.

Key highlights from this video interview are:

  • Traefik Labs is announcing its new product, Traefik Hub, a Kubernetes native API management solution. Vauge discusses their other offerings: Traefik Proxy, a popular ingress controller with already 3 million downloads, and Traefik Enterprise, an enterprise API gateway.
  • Over 80% of web traffic is now API and more than 90% of new digital services are API driven. The API market today is $5 billion and is forecast to be $30 billion by 2030. Vauge explains the key drivers behind building their reverse proxy in 2015 and why they have now created their fully native API management solution.
  • Security continues to be a crucial consideration and so the API management platform comes with mandatory security features like full encryption of the request, automated TLS certificate management, access control management, and permissions management.
  • Traefik Hub enables you to add API management capabilities on top of existing infrastructure providing better time to value compared with other solutions. Vauge discusses some of the benefits of their new product such as how it is fully cloud-native, fully automated, GitOps compliant, agnostic, and neutral.
  • Traefik Hub’s features include automatic discovery of your communities by installing a traffic agent in your cluster and connecting it to their platform to help you expose them as APIs. It also has a developer portal to give you the ability to give access to partners or internal developer teams with different permissions.
  • Traefik Labs’ key focus for the future is simplifying the complex cloud-native world. In the future, companies will have hundreds of thousands of community clusters in different environments. Vauge talks about the future of hyper-distribution and how Traefik Hub enables you to have a centralized, agnostic control plane that helps you gather everything into one place.
