The year 2022 is likely to see organizations focusing more on Kubernetes security. Rich Burroughs, Senior Developer Advocate at Loft Labs, joins us on 2022 Prediction Series and dusts off his crystal balls to share, “The security in Kubernetes has improved a lot in the last few years. They’ve just added some new alpha features. And I think that trend is going to continue.” As supply chain attacks are expected to multiply in the coming year, Burroughs also predicts an increased focus on software supply chain security. Swapnil Bhartiya: Hi, this is your host Swapnil Bhartiya, and welcome to our specials series on predictions for 2022, and today we have with us, Rich Burroughs, Senior Developer Advocate at Loft Labs. Rich, it is great to have you on the show.

Rich Burroughs: Thanks. I’m really glad to be here.

Swapnil Bhartiya: Yeah, we have spoken earlier, but this is the first time and we are talking about predictions, but before I ask you to grab your crystal ball, please quickly tell us what Loft Labs is all about?

Rich Burroughs: Yeah. So we provide multi-tenancy and self-service for platform teams that are administrating Kubernetes clusters, and want to provide Kubernetes environments for their developers.

Swapnil Bhartiya: Excellent. Now it’s time for you to pick your crystal ball and tell us what predictions you have.

Rich Burroughs: So the first one is that, I think there’s going to be an increased focus on Kubernetes security. The security in Kubernetes has improved a lot in the last few years. They’ve just added some new alpha features. And I think that trend is going to continue. Initially it was very wide open and people are working on improving the tooling a lot.

Second, I think there’s going to be obviously an increase as well in the thinking about software supply chain security. That’s been a big thing in 2021, it’s going to continue, the folks like chain guard, and their open source project. SIG stores are making some really big improvements in that area.

Third, our open source virtual cluster technology called vcluster that we introduced, has really, really gotten a lot of buzz. A lot of people are really excited about it. It’s a whole new model in terms of how you share Kubernetes clusters with your developers. I expect that we’re going to see a lot more interest in that in the coming year.

And last, I think that there’s always a lot of thought about improving developer productivity, and I expect that to continue. There’s been a lot of really good thinking around that by Dr. Nicole Forsgren and some other folks, and I expect that we’ll keep working on new tooling and new ways to make developers productive and happy.

Swapnil Bhartiya: Rich, thanks for sharing these predictions. If I ask you, what is going to be the focus of the company in 2022?

Rich Burroughs: Well, we’re in one of those phases where we’re still at a very early stage. We got some funding this year, I expect we’re going to get some more next year. And so, I think there’s going to be a lot of growth. We’re going to be building out the staff, and improving the products even more, it’s going to be a super exciting time at Loft Labs.

Swapnil Bhartiya: Excellent. Thanks for sharing these predictions and also the focus of the company. And as I said, I would love to have you back again on the show next year, to see how many of your predictions turn out to be true, and get the next set of predictions for the next year, but thanks for your time today. Thank you.

Rich Burroughs: Thank you.[/expander_maker]
