Open Source At VMware | Dirk Hohndel

In the past year, VMware has acquired many open source companies including Heptio, Bitani and (soon) Pivotal. What happens to the open-source code and open source engineers that come to VMware through these acquisitions? VMware is one of the many companies that build products based on open source code. Health and sustainability of these projects are critical to the success of VMware, but what are the indicators that a project is healthy and sustainable? If VMware is taking open source projects and commercializing them why can’t people just use those upstream projects instead of buying from VMware?

These are some of the many topics we discussed with Dirk Hohndel, VP and Open Source Officer at VMware to discuss open source at VMware.

The interview was recorded at VMworld 2019.
