Sony PlayStation 4 can be the VR King, Sales Hit Over 91 Million Units

Sony’s PlayStation 4 outruns Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Switch to remain the world’s most popular gaming console. PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 91.6 million units globally as of December 2018. PlayStation 4 has sold through more than 5.6 million units globally during the 2018 holiday season, the company said.

PS4 is one of the most popular platforms that could change the virtual reality landscape. Despite all efforts, other players that include Apple, Google, HTC and Facebook have remained far behind to put VR machines in people’s home.

All of these 91.6 million PS4 machines are VR platforms. In fact, last year Sony said that they sold more than 3 million PlayStation VR systems worldwide, along with 21.9 million PS VR games and experiences.

No other player has come close to beating Sony in the VR space. What I would expect Sony to do is take the lead and push more VR content and experience. In addition to VR, Sony must also bring 3D movies to PS4. So far you can only play 3D Bluray disks. Unlike Oculus Rift, Sony VR users can’t buy or rent 3D movies online.

The company has plans to bring more enhanced experiences to fans “along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4,” said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, launched in September 2018, has cumulatively sold through more than 9 million copies globally as of November 25, 2018.
