Understanding CI/CD From Cloud Foundry Perspective | Chip Childers

0

CI/CD is a critical piece of model infrastructure to ensure velocity, reliability and security of deployment. In this episode of TFiR Let’s Talk, we hosted Chip Childers, Executive Director – Cloud Foundry Foundation, to talk about how Cloud Foundry helps users with their CI/CD pipelines. According to Childers, CI/CD is fundamentally about shortening the time to market or task time – from the feature being initially developed, rolled out to users who experience it and provide the feedback.

Whether it’s CI tools, CD tools or both, we are essentially trying to create a world where developers are continuously able to flow software through the whole supply chain out to the users. Some of the topics we discussed included difference between CI & CD or is it all about CD. We dug deeper into the history of CI/CD tooling and got his insights into how much things have changed from the old days of patchwork with things like Jenkins to modern projects which are now hosted at the sister foundations like CD Foundation.

We also talked about the limitation of ‘cf push’ and how the Cloud Foundry community is leveraging other CD tools and projects. We can’t not talk about Kubernetes, so we had a look at Cloud Foundry and Kubernetes from a CD perspective. Last but not least, Chip also invited the cloud native community to attend the upcoming Cloud Foundry Summit scheduled for July.

Chip Childers has spent 20 years in large-scale computing and open source software. In 2020, he took over as Executive Director at Cloud Foundry Foundation, which he co-founded in 2015. He was the first VP of Apache Cloudstack, a platform he helped drive while leading Enterprise Cloud Services at SunGard and then as VP Product Strategy at Cumulogic.

The Cloud Foundry Foundation supports the development, promotion and adoption of the Cloud Foundry family of open source projects, the industry leading developer experience to companies of all sizes. The Foundation projects include Cloud Foundry, KubeCF, cf-for-k8s, Eirini, Project Quarks, BOSH, Open Service Broker API, Abacus, CF-Local, CredHub, ServiceFabrik, Stratos and more.
