A few years ago in Barcelona, I recall sitting down with Morgan McLean, now Director of Product Management at Splunk and Ben Sigelman, Cofounder and CEO of Lightstep, and we talked about two open source projects (OpenCensus and OpenTracing) merging to become OpenTelemtry.
Fast-forward to 2022, I caught up with McLean to get an update on how far the project has come and what kind of adoption it’s enjoying in the market.
He said OpenTelemetry has become the second most active CNCF Project after Kubernetes, with over 800 active contributors per month. It is currently used in production across industries and is supported by a wide range of players, including Splunk. We also talked about the role observability plays in platform engineering.
